Ajanta Travels Pvt Ltd., started in 1982 as general sales agent for Air Tanzania. since Air Tanzania had no representative of their own, we handled all their functions like an airline including ticketing and reservations.
In 1982, Ajanta Travels was appointed GSA for Alitalia for the State of Gujarat. Subsequently, as a reward for our productivity and efficiency, Alitalia extended our GSA territory to include South India and closed their own offices in Bangalore and Chennai.
We developed Chennai and Bangalore as very important Cargo Sectors. As a result, Alitalia introduced Boeing 747 freighters from Chennai which still continue. This decision cannot be regretted by them as outside Italy, Chennai is the only center where Alitalia enjoys numero uno status. We have not looked back on the Alitalia passenger front either. Though our territories as GSA for Alitalia passenger front either. Though our territories as GSA for Alitalia cover only 30% of market share in passenger traffic in India, our production averages more than 50% of total passenger productivity of Alitalia.
Taking this into consideration, Alitalia added Maharashtra to our territory in 1995. Our performance cannot be considered an exaggeration since Alitalia increased its frequency two fold i.e. 6 flights a week since April 2000 compared to a previous 3 flights a week.
Alitalia and Ajanta are still negotiating for increased frequency in our territory.
In 1981, we were appointed GSA for Zambia Airways for India. Here again, we were handling all the functions required to be handled as an airline without any Zambia Airways started their own office, we were their all India GSA. We handled the whole operation without any representative.
In 1983, we were appointed GSA for Kenya Airways for the state of Gujarat for passenger. We continue to be their best GSA till date.
In 2000 we were appointed GSA for LAM, the official flagship carrier for Mozambique. Though an offline carrier with connecting flights regularly between Dubai and Johannesburg, this carrier shows tremendous potential. Negotiations for operating to India with code share flights or traffic rights for directly operating to Mumbai are in process and may be finalized soon.
